Rozaly (Mathijs Reinen, Curaçao 1998) is an autodidact sonic practitioner, curator, researcher and DJ who is committed to challenging traditional ideas surrounding Caribbean musical memories and expanding the narratives that define them. Mathijs moved to the Netherlands in 2017 in order to explore new opportunities, and exchange knowledge and stories.
His approach, tinged with absurdism, seeks to unearth collective memories and lost heritage in an endless individual identity search that provides a refreshing perspective that complements the focus and knowledge on Caribbean influences in modern sound. Constantly growing and shrinking his artistic practices in order to have lost or lesser-known Caribbean music stories make conversation with a new generation or a new audience. With performances at Dekmantel Festival, Nyege Nyege, and De School, and as a regular at Garage Noord, Rozaly brings a wealth of experience to the table. Besides having the entire discography from Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao archived over the past 8 years. Which led to different research purposes within the framework of his co-founded music platform RANSON.
Additionally, he curates and designs sound for various art and music projects, working alongside renowned visual artists and brands. A key principle in his practice is his commitment to artistically presenting contextually accurate sonic experiences from the Caribbean.
